Childhood Adversities Increase the Risk of Psychosis: A Meta – analysis of Patient – Control, Prospective – and Cross – sectional Cohort Studies

This study has brought together psychiatric data from almost 80 000 people and adds to the growing body of evidence that childhood adversities can lead to poor mental health outcomes in adults. This study demonstrates a correlation between childhood abuse and neglect and an increase in the risk of developing schizophrenia and other psychotic illnesses in later life.

Interpersonal trauma exposure and cognitive development in children to age 8 years: a longitudinal study

This study examined the impact of interpersonal trauma exposure, such as domestic violence, in the first years of life on childhood cognitive functioning. The results of the study indicated that when a child is exposed to interpersonal trauma in early life, especially in the first 2 years of life, there may be adverse effects on cognitive development that persist into later childhood.
